In the Feb 2011 issue of the Internet Retailer magazine, there is article titled: how today's smartphone and computers change retailers' site design strategies.
In the article, the president of of AmericanEagle.com, Michael Svanascini, argued that:
Aesthetic appeal no long drives e-retail web site design. Today, retailers need to think more about designing sites compatible with the growing variety of devices consumes used to access the web.
Simple is beautiful.
Small screens (i.e. smartphone screens, etc).
